![]() ![]() I do, however, acknowledge that the film deserves all the recognition it gets for its accomplishments as a sci-fi work. As acclaimed as this movie is, I didn’t find it to be as incredible as I expected. Not that they were ineffective in proving their point, but none of their personalities left much of an impact on me. These problems took the form of some seriously uncharismatic antagonists. All the while, Blade Runner explored the nature of human life with problems created by futuristic genetic engineering. ![]() I enjoyed watching Deckard track down criminals in a classic detective story. Thankfully, the surface of the plot was easily followed. This makes it difficult to understand how characters connect on a large scale. Big ideas are often suggested with such subtlety that one has to dig deep in order to connect the hints. In hindsight, it’s easy to grasp the themes of the movie and how they surround its players, but this is not true in the midst of the film. However, what do lack weight in Blade Runner are the characters. Even if the props and backdrops of Blade Runner don’t look 100% realistic, they have a weight that any computer-generated element lacks. A talented application of matte paintings results in backgrounds that have more depth than most CGI environments of this age, and the models and practically-built technology are fantastic. ![]() Not only is everything from clothing design to computers distinctly 80s, but every single piece of special effects represents some of the best creative efforts of the decade. (I especially enjoyed Harrison Ford’s questionable morals as a jaded ex-cop, and his voiceovers- although he himself apparently hated them.) Often, futuristic movies reflect just as much of the era they are made in as the one they try to emulate- and Blade Runner is no exception. ![]() Blade Runner is clearly a sci-fi trailblazer, but it also utilizes classic noir elements. Something that I love about movies like this is that when I recognize certain themes, tropes, or styles while watching, I can never be certain if they are already in use by that time, or if this might actually be the movie which first popularized them. (This is my try at a fancy-sounding review, so please enjoy the unnecessarily flowery language.) ![]()
